What region of Africa is Senegal in?
Senegal is the western most country in Africa. It is in Sub Saharan
Africa and is bordered by Mauritania, Guinea Bissau and Mali with
Gambia resting within its interior.

What type of government does Senegal have?
Senegal has been a democracy since it gained its independence from
France in 1961. The most recent elections were held in February 2007.

Who is eligible for the Summer Academy of West Africa?
Motivated, independent, and confident High School students ages 15 to 18.

Where do students stay?
The Academy’s housing facility is the Camp De Lac Rose, which offers
quaint fully air conditioned bungalows equipped with mosquito nets. The Camp offers a dining facility and serves participants international and African cuisine on site. Additionally the Camp has a swimming pool and is walking distance to the beach.

What language must participants speak?
No previous 2nd language skills are necessary to apply. French classes will be taught in French and are designed for beginner to intermediate speakers. There will be translators available at all times during the program. There are several languages spoken through out the country and as a result participants will have an opportunity to practice French and gain a beginners knowledge of Wolof, Peulh, and Serer (the county’s ethnic languages).

Will participants need a visa?
Visas are not required for the United States or European Countries.

Will the Academy be insured?
The Academy and its participants will be fully insured by the Academy.

What will the weather be like during the periods of the Academy?
Temperatures can easily range from the mid 80s to the upper 90s with brief periods of intense rain.

Is Malaria present in Senegal?
Senegal is a Malaria region but risk is greatly reduced for participants because rooms will be fully enclosed and air-conditioned. Additionally, daily preventative medicines are available and can be purchased in the country of departure.

Will there be a doctor on staff?
A full time doctor is available to address medical needs.

Where will classes take place?
Classes and training sessions will be held in a fully air-conditioned conference centre on the Camp grounds.
